Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday expressed his hope Denmark would support Georgia’s European aspirations and granting the country the European Union membership candidate status.
Papuashvili, who is on an official visit to Denmark, said it was “time” for the EU to "say to what extent it has a long-term interest" in the Black Sea region.
We fully hope that Denmark will support Georgia in terms of its European aspirations and candidate status. We absolutely agreed with our [Danish] counterparts that today it was the moment of truth for the European Union itself to send the correct signal to the Moldovan, Ukrainian and Georgian people, as well as to Russia”, the head of the Georgian legislative body said.
Papuashvili also stressed the Georgian authorities expected that the “final decision” on the candidate status would be “positive”, claiming there should be an “equal approach” to the Associated Trio countries of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova on the matter.
It is important that all three countries receive the sign of solidarity that the people of these countries expect. Also, to receive the signal of recognition and support related to the institutional development of our country”, the Parliament Speaker concluded.
