German Ambassador to Georgia Hubert Knirsch on Wednesday said he would participate in a public rally planned in Tbilisi in support of the country’s European Union integration and announced by Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili.
Knirsch responded to a public call by Zourabichvili, who on Tuesday proposed the public and political parties to gather on Europe Square on Thursday to show Europe “our unity”.
She also invited ambassadors of EU countries in Georgia to the occasion, which comes amid the European Commission’s deliberation over the country’s application for membership candidate status.
President Zourabichvili invited the citizens to Europe Square to support Georgia's European future. It is remarkable that the head of state calls on the citizens to publicly show their position on Europe. I will be at Europe Square tomorrow to witness this declaration of intent”, the German Ambassador said.
The Senate of Ireland on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on the European Union and its institutions to grant Georgia the membership candidate status.
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Tuesday appealed to Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, to take into account the “will of Georgian people” and the “road taken by the country” in the upcoming decision over granting European Union membership candidate status to Georgia.

Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger on Tuesday urged German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to support Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova as European Union membership candidates, while also calling on the German leader to see the horrors of the war in Ukraine with his “own eyes”.
A number of German political parties, including the opposition CDU/CSU faction, have launched a motion supporting a “rapid granting” of European Union membership candidate status to the Associated Trio countries Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, German media reported on Tuesday.

Hubert Knirsch, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Sunday welcomed the Georgian Government’s initiation of work on a strategy to fulfil the 12-point conditions outlined by the European Council for granting the country the European Union membership candidate status, and said “all parties” should work in unison to overcome the polarised domestic political environment.
