Visitors of the city of Telavi in eastern Georgia’s winemaking province of Kakheti can now learn about monuments and landmarks in the location by scanning QR codes added to them by local authorities.

Providing information in Georgian and English, the codes also introduce visitors to a photographic chronicle of the city, as well as events including international sports tournaments and festivals.

A virtual tour of the city and e-books about it are also available through the codes, Telavi City Hall said.

The project aims to integrate and develop urban areas of Telavi, increase access to the regional centre, position [the city] as a regional hub and promote its historical monuments," the City Hall said.

Georgian Ministry of Infrastructure announced earlier over 500 infrastructure projects worth ₾96 million (about $33mln/€31mln) would be implemented in Kakheti.

From solar-powered utilities to digital information initiatives co-funded by the European Union, recreational spaces, irrigation systems, cultural venues and more, the region will receive both new initiatives and upgrades to its infrastructure.

In Telavi, the initiatives have also involved installation of solar-powered chairs, allowing locals and visitors to enjoy free internet and phone-charging utilities and receive information from a Telavi tourist map posted on a lightbox.
