Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure on Saturday visited infrastructure projects ongoing as part of the Renewed Regions state programme in Kareli, a city of central-eastern Georgia’s Shida Kartli region, the Government Administration said.

The projects include rehabilitation of the central square in the city, along with renovation of building facades on Chavchavadze, Tamar Mepe and Egnate Ninoshvili streets, with the works funded by the Municipal Development Fund.

Garibashvili and Kareli Mayor Zaza Guliashvili also inspected the construction of a new sports complex that will include two swimming pools and a gym and is located on Akhalgazrdoba Street. The cost of the project is ₾5.6 million (about 1.92m/€1.82) funded from local budget.

The PM said his Government was taking "important steps" in developing sports infrastructure across the country to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The head of the Government, accompanied by officials of legislative and executive branches, also visited a family greenhouse in the village of Kvemo Nikozi, where farmers have 1.10 hectares of land registered and are benefiting from the PM-initiated Agricultural Land Owners Support Programme, launched earlier this month and involving over 100.000.

Otar Shamugia, the Minister of Environment and Agriculture, said the 340 farmers out of 1200 who had activated their Agro-Card systems for participating in the programme had used state subsidies for their enterprises.  Garibashvili said over 300.000 small farmers would benefit from the subsidy programme, which has a budget of ₾35 million (about 12m/€11m).

Garibashvili also highlighted the first phase of the Renewed Regions project was underway in the central Georgian city of Gori, including rehabilitation of buildings, restoration of historical monuments and  renovation of squares and gardens “to create European-type [city] centres.”
