Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili met Toivo Klaar, the Co-chair of the Geneva International Discussions and the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, in Tbilisi on Thursday to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Russian occupation of two regions of Georgia, and the security environment and challenges in the South Caucasus region.

Garibashvili noted his Government stood “firmly by” the international community over the ongoing war in Ukraine and continued to provide political and practical support to the country in both bilateral and multilateral formats.

The conversation between the two officials also focused on the comprehensive state strategy on de-occupation of Georgian territories and a peaceful settlement of the conflict. The “crucial” role of EU support and involvement in the further implementation of the strategy was also noted by the sides.

The head of the Georgian Government thanked the EU Special Representative for his efforts in the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Georgia to the  peaceful policy for its solution, the Government Administration said.

In other remarks, the officials emphasised the significance of achieving “effective, tangible” results in the format of the Geneva International Discussions, as well as the need to restart meetings of the Gali Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism - a platform facilitating talks between Georgian state agencies and de facto authorities of the occupied northwestern Abkhazia region.
