Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili met with Co-chair of Geneva International Discussions (GID) and EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaar, in Tbilisi earlier today to discuss occupation and regional security issues.
Garibashvili said that the increased efforts of the international community is needed to ensure the release of illegally detained Georgian citizens by Russian-controlled occupation forces.
He said that Georgia is waiting for genuine results achieved within the Geneva International Discussions, particularly for the fulfillment of the 2008 ceasefire agreement by Russia and the peaceful return of IDPs to the country’s occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.

Garibashvili welcomed the creation of sub-groups within GID on concrete conflict issues, during the recent, 54th round of the talks.
He expressed hope that the Gali and Ergneti Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meetings, focused mostly on humanitarian issues, will soon resume.
Garibashvili reiterated that Georgia supports only the peaceful resolution of the conflicts and is taking steps to meditate for peace in the region.
Klaar welcomed Georgia’s recent mediation efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia which led to the release of Armenian war prisoners.
Gariabashvili also discussed the Peaceful Neighbourhood Initiative in the South Caucasus recently proposed by him which aims to ensure peace and stability in the region.
