Georgia has “all practical tools” to join NATO and has “never been so close” to the alliance, Irakli Beraia, the Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Security of the Parliament of Georgia, said on Wednesday.

Beraia made the comment following an address to the Parliament by James Appathurai, the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges.

Georgia has all the practical tools to join the alliance and has never been as close to NATO as it is today. Georgia has extensive experience in securing the Euro-Atlantic area. Our country is ready and willing to further strengthen the security of the Euro-Atlantic area, and [...] is committed to the principles of the North Atlantic Treaty, which is also the unshakable will of the population,” Beraia said.

The Georgian official noted the meeting with Appathurai had focused on questions such as Georgia's accelerated integration into the alliance and the country’s role in cybersecurity.

We talked about further deepening the cooperation with NATO in the field of combating hybrid threats. This is especially important when Georgia is strengthening its national resilience against [such] threats,” the MP said.

The meeting also discussed the situation in the Black Sea region, Russia’s war against Ukraine and the “urgent need” to accelerate Georgia's integration into NATO.
