A group of Members of the European Parliament visiting Georgia said on Thursday they were “committed” to support Georgia on its European path and to stand by its people to stop any attempts by Russia to destabilise the country.
The MEPs voiced their support for the country's pro-European aspirations, adding the road to closer partnership with the European Union required Georgia to adopt reforms in key sectors.
Our timely visit enabled Members of the European Parliament to express solidarity with the people of a country envisaging full EU membership and which has been affected by the Russian aggression against Ukraine. We remain committed to support Georgia on its European path and to stand by its people to stop any attempts by Russia to destabilise Georgia”, Head of the Delegation Lukas Mandl said.
The delegation also condemned the illegal “elections” held between March 12-14 in the Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia and on April 10 in the occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, expressing support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Four members from the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Security and Defence visited Georgia between April 10-14. In Tbilisi, they met with President Salome Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze and members of the Georgian Parliament from both the ruling party and the opposition.
