Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani has announced that tomorrow a Georgian delegation headed by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili will leave for Brussels to participate in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) summit on December 15, calling it an ‘extremely important event’ to bring Georgia closer to the European Union (EU).

Zalkaliani also talked about expectations Georgia has regarding this event and noted that the progress made by the country during the last 12 years since the establishment of the Eastern Partnership will be reflected in an upcoming declaration.

I am confident that the declaration which will be adopted on December 15 will match up to our expectations, in particular our EU aspirations and EU choices, as well as reaffirming the EU's greater involvement in conflict resolution and reaffirming our country's sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Zalkaliani stated.

He also pledged that Georgia will be involved in EU programmes and agencies ‘as much as possible’ in order to ensure the country's integration into the EU, noting that in this regard Georgia has made ‘very serious progress.’

Georgia expects to have ‘tangible results’ following the summit which will ‘define further steps’ regarding the country’s integration into the EU, Zalkaliani said.

Zalkaliani participated in an EaP meeting on November 15 where the importance of the upcoming summit and future goals of the partner countries were discussed, followed by an Associated Trio meeting of Georgian, Ukrainian and Moldovan PMs in Brussels on November 30 ahead of the EaP summit.

Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova are the three associated partners of the EU which was established in May 2021 to strengthen cooperation towards common European goals and help the signatory countries rapidly integrate into the EU.

The EaP format was launched on April 7, 2009, and united six Eastern European countries – Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. However, in June 2021, Belarus suspended its membership following the economic sanctions imposed by the EU against the country.
