The Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) has released a statement about human rights challenges in Georgia on International Human Rights Day which is marked today.

GYLA says that the socio-economic situation has worsened in the country during the pandemic and the steps taken by the state have been insufficient to address the situation.

A number of economic activities were limited in the country in 2020 and 2021 in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Quite a lot of people have lost their livelihoods and they were not able to fulfill their loan and credit obligations”, says the GYLA.

In its statement the GYLA has also mentioned that the majority of children do not have access to quality education during the pandemic because they have to attend classes remotely. Part of the country’s population is socially vulnerable and does not have access to the Internet or electronic devices.

Unlawful interference with journalists’ professional activities remains one of the main challenges in terms of human rights protection.

Attacks on journalists in recent years are uninvestigated. A clear example of the problem is the events which took place on July 5 during the Tbilisi Pride counter rally in Tbilisi, when dozens of journalists became victims of violence by right-wing activists”, reads the statement.
