Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili is paying an official visit to Austria today.
Diplomatic relations between Georgia and Austria were established on March 25, 1992.
The Embassy of Georgia to Austria first was opened in 1993 while the Embassy of Austria in Tbilisi was launched in 2016.
President Zurabishvili will start her visit in Vienna where she will meet with Georgian representatives of the cultural and medical spheres working in Austria.
The official welcoming ceremony of President Zurabishvili will be held at the Hofburg Palace on October 12 where the Federal President of the Republic of Austrian Alexander van der Bellen will welcome his counterpart after which the two presidents will have a face-to-face meeting and a joint briefing.
Salome Zurabishvili will open the Austria-Georgia Business Forum where the two countries’ companies will be presented.
President Zurabishvili will also meet OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid after which she will host a conference Woman for Peace with a special exhibit on the first Nobel Peace Prize-winning woman Bertha von Suttner.
President Zurabishvili’s official visit to Austria will be concluded on October 13.
Georgia and Austria actively cooperate in various fields such as economy, education, culture and science.
Overall 11 agreements have been signed between the countries in the areas such as air transport and promotion and protection of investments.
The foreign ministers of Austria, Romania and Lithuania, Alexander Schallenberg, Bogdan Aurescu and Gabrielius Landsbergis, are paying a visit to Georgia today. The three foreign ministers are visiting Georgia as part of their regional tour to the South Caucasus, which includes visits to Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia in coordination with High Representative Josep Borrell and the European External Action Service.
Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, who previously served as the Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality of Georgia, has been appointed as the country’s new ambassador to Austria. She served as the Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality since August 2016, and the first deputy minister of the same body before that.

Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen says economic relations with Georgia are good nowadays, but they have ‘great potential to be intensified’. In his opening remarks at the Austria-Georgia business forum held in Vienna earlier today, President van der Bellen also noted that after the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the Georgian economy ‘has picked up speed again very quickly'.

During the meeting earlier today, Zurabishvili addressed human rights violation cases in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, including the unlawful arrests of Georgian citizens: Irakli Bebua, Genadi Bestayev and Gela Gochoshvili.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has met the Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg in Glasgow on the sidelines of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference where they discussed the importance of further deepening of trade-economic ties between the two countries.
