Georgia has exported 15,300 tonnes of hazelnuts between August 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021 which is a 49% increase compared to the same period of 2019, announces Georgian Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection.
The exports generated $79.2 million in revenue, marking a $51 million increase compared to the same period of 2019-2020.
During the same period the export price of hazelnuts increased by seven per cent, said the ministry.
Georgian hazelnuts were also exported to Armenia (873 tonnes), Russia (713 tonnes), Turkey (530 tonnes), Belarus (444 tonnes), Ukraine (290 tonnes), Brazil (186 tonnes), Algeria (185 tonnes), 146 (136 tonnes) and others.
Since 2016, as a result of the spread of brown marmorated stink bug in Georgia hazelnut production and exports has been declining and in 2018 reached a minimum mark of 17,000 tonnes. The Agriculture Minister says that the high-quality hazelnut harvest of 2020 is the result of the joint activities of the ministry as well as the farmers who fought against the insect.
