Georgian patriarch orders churches to comply with regulations as coronavirus spikes at record levels

Georgian Patriarch Ilia II has ordered Orthodox churches to comply with regulations such as usage of disposable cups, distance, disinfection and wearing the facemasks as coronavirus spikes in the country at a record level. 

Patriarch’s order specified that all Georgian orthodox churches and monasteries must obey the Covid-19 regulations for three weeks starting August 14. 

The Georgian government imposed new coronavirus three-week-long restrictions yesterday amid the surge of new daily Covid-19 cases to curb the spread of the virus.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili stressed the importance of the Georgian Orthodox Church in the fight against coronavirus and noted that ‘we will all be responsible for tomorrow's outcome.’

Georgia reported 5,359 new cases of coronavirus and 42 deaths in the past 24 hours.

A total of 741,353 people have been vaccinated so far out of which 225,053 people are fully vaccinated.
