Newborn dies of coronavirus in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic

A 25-day-old newborn has died of coronavirus in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic in Tbilisi today.
Medical director of the clinic Maia Chkhaidze told Interpressnews that the baby contracted coronavirus from family members.
In addition to coronavirus, the newborn had other underlying diseases.
The patient was infected with Alpha, the British variant of the coronavirus. Following acute respiratory failure, the newborn was put on artificial ventilation... Despite the involvement of the whole staff, the newborn didn’t make it. He/she was taken to the clinic at the age of five days”, the doctor said.
Two other newborns with respiratory complications are on artificial respiration in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic. One of the two patients was transferred from Russia-occupied Abkhazia to Tbilisi nearly a week ago, and tested positive for the Delta variant of Covid-19 on July 9.
Head of the National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze said on July 9 that the Delta variant is expected to completely replace the British variant of Covid-19 by mid-August in Georgia.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that the Delta variant of coronavirus is more transmittable in all age groups.
Georgia has reported 1,653 new cases of coronavirus, 466 recoveries and 13 deaths in the past 24 hours. In total, 34,800 tests have been conducted around the country of which 18,765 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 16,035 were PCR tests. Since February 26, 2020 Georgia has had 384,387 cases of coronavirus, 362,957 recoveries and 5,516 deaths.
Georgian Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia has said earlier today that due to the worsening epidemiological situation some restrictions may be imposed again in the country. She said that Covid-19 is spreading fast and without intervention this rate will increase further.
Georgia has confirmed 20 cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant, Head of the National Disease Control Center (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze says. Gamkrelidze also said that up to 15-20% of people in Georgia are being infected with this particular strain.
Two new confirmed cases of the Indian strain of Covid-19 virus have been identified in Georgia, National Centre for Disease Control head Amiran Gamkrelidze said on Saturday.
Attendance at conferences, trainings and seminars will be allowed only on the basis of PCR test starting July 19. Regardless of their organisational form and venue, camp-type gatherings will be prohibited in Georgia starting July 19.

An infant has died of the Delta variant of coronavirus at the Tsitsishvili Clinic in the capital city of Tbilisi. Medical director of clinic Maia Chkhaidze told local media outlet InterPressNews that the child's health condition was critical.
