Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has announced the formation of the For Georgia political union.
Gakharia announced on Facebook yesterday that his party presentation will be held at 5 p.m. on May 29:
Giorgi Gakharia who served as PM since September 2019 resigned on February 18, 2021 following a disagreement with the ruling Georgian Dream party about the arrest of the opposition United National Movement party chair Nika Melia.
Later on March 22 Gakharia said that he had ‘no plans to leave the country or politics’. On April 14, six MPs - Giorgi Khojevanishvili, Aleksandre Motserelia,Beka Liluashvili, Shalva Kerselidze, Ana Buchukuri and Mikheil Daushvili - left the Georgian Dream to join Gakharia’s team.
Ex-PM Gakharia's team now also includes Georgia’s former ambassador to NATO Levan Dolidze and former head of the ex-President Giorgi Margvelashvili’s administration Giorgi Abashishvili.
With his new political team Gakharia plans to participate in the upcoming local self-government elections this fall. The will also have its mayoral candidate in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.
Former Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia has posted a photo taken at the grave of the country’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia earlier today and stated that ‘we must end polarisation and work towards the building of a successful state.’
Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has stated that he has ‘no plans to leave the country or politics.’ He told journalists earlier today that he will announce his intentions in the coming days. Gakharia resigned on February 18, 2021, saying that the step was connected with the upcoming arrest of the opposition MP and the head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia.
The ruling Georgian Dream party MP Nikoloz Samkharadze stated earlier today that ‘as far as I know PM Giorgi Gakharia not only resigned but also left the Georgian Dream.’
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has announced his resignation earlier today, saying that the step is connected with the upcoming arrest of the opposition MP, the head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia. Gakharia has stated that Melia violated the law and has been engaged in sparking tension in the country.
Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who now chairs the For Georgia political union, said at the party’s launch presentation earlier today that ‘we unite for Georgia, but not against anybody’. Stating that his team will be actively involved in political processes, Gakharia said Georgia now needs a political party which can ‘look the truth in the eyes’ and speak up about the challenges the country is facing nowadays, instead of living in illusions.
The head of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that the June 2019 rally dispersal in Tbilisi was ‘unclearly’ planned by then Interior Minister and former PM Giorgi Gakharia who recently founded a new political party For Georgia.
Former Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia, who now chairs political party For Georgia, is holding meetings with European Parliament members in Brussels.
