Georgian President Salome Zurabishvii met with representatives of the public, local non-governmental and international organisations to discuss steps to be taken against domestic violence in the country.

In her tweet, President Zurabishvili referred to the recent attempt of premeditated murder that took place in the Georgian region of Shida Kartli earlier today.
In partcular, the Georgian Interior Ministry reported that an individual, identified only as M.L. and born in 1992 injured his ex-wife, identified only as S.Ch. and born in 1995.
The crime is punishable by 13 to 17 years in prison.
Expressing her willingness to be engaged in the activities aimed to counter violence against women and domestic violence in the country, President Zurabishvili called for everyone to unite around this challenge.
A total of 4,564 individuals were charged for domestic violence and crimes throughout Georgia in 2019, based on the recent official statistical data.
A law drafted by the Interior Ministry, which makes the punishment for certain forms of domestic violence more severe, came into force in December 2018.
