January 2020: monthly prices up 0.7 per cent

In January 2020 monthly prices in Georgia increased by 0.7 per cent, while the annual inflation rate amounted to 6.4 per cent, show the latest inflation data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages in Georgia increased by 2.3 per cent compared to the previous month, contributing 0.76 per cent of the overall monthly inflation.   

In particular monthly prices increased in the following subgroups:

  • Vegetables – 8.6 percent
  • Milk, cheese and eggs - 6.1 percent
  • Oils and fats – 4.2 percent
  • Fruit and grapes- 3 percent
  • Coffee, tea and cocoa - 0.6 percent
  • Meat - 0.4 percent

Along with this, prices decreased for mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices by 1.2 per cent.

An increase of monthly prices mostly occurred in the following groups:

  • Food and alcoholic beverages – 2.3 per cent 
  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco – 1.8 per cent
  • Restaurants and hotels – 0.8 per cent

A decrease of monthly prices mostly occurred in the following groups:

  • Recreation and culture – 4.5 per cent
  • Clothing and footwear – 3.5 per cent
  • Transport – 0.1 per cent

Annual prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 11.3 per cent compared to January last year contributing 3.57 per cent of overall annual inflation.
