March inflation: prices of food, non-alcoholic beverages up, transport costs down

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages have increased in Georgia, while transport related costs have reduced, show the latest inflation data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

In March 2020 the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2 per cent. The prices in the group increased for the subgroups of:

  • Vegetables (9.6 per cent)
  • Fruit and grapes (8.9 per cent)
  • Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery (3.7 per cent)
  • Oils and fats (2.6 per cent)
  • Mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (2.3 per cent)
  • Bread and cereals (1.7 per cent)

Meanwhile, the prices decreased for:

  • Milk, cheese and eggs (-1.3 per cent)
  • Fish (-1.2 per cent)

Prices of transport went down by 0.8 per cent. The prices decreased for included:

  • Transport services (-2 per cent)
  • operation of personal transport equipment (-1.4 per cent)
  • In addition, the prices increased for purchase of vehicles (8.6 per cent).

Overall in March 2020, the consumer price index increased by 0.7 per cent compared to the previous month, while the annual inflation rate amounted to 6.1 per cent.
