Co-chairs of the Geneva Internal Discussions from the EU, UN and EU, dealing with Georgian conflict issues, are in the Russian occupied Abkhazia region of Georgia to discuss the details of the recent death of Georgian citizen Irakli Kvaratskhelia in the region.

The European Union Monitoring Mission reported the incident yesterday.

De facto authorities claim that the 29-year-old man, who was illegally detained for the crossing of so-called border, committed suicide in a holding cell.

Tbilisi is demanding details to verify the account of events offered by the de facto authorities.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry has already informed the international community regarding the “alarming incident”.

Locals say that Kvaratskhelia had a verbal dispute with occupying forces who beat him brutally.

  • The Geneva International Discussions were launched in 2008 to address the consequences of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
  • The participants of the Geneva International Discussions are the central Georgia government, the de facto leaderships of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, Russia, the US, the UN, the OSCE and the EU.
