The bodies of 23 people who went missing as a result of military conflicts in Georgia in the 1990s and in 2008 have been identified by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The ICRC has held group and individual meetings with members of the families of the deceased, and provided them with information on the identification process and answered their questions.

The families were also provided with psychological consultation.

The decades of vagueness for 23 Georgian, Abkhaz and Ossetian missing people’s families have ended,”  said Nicolas Fleury, the ICRC operations coordinator for Europe and Central Asia.

Approximately 2,300 people are still considered to be missing in Georgia as a result of military conflicts in the 1990s and August 2008.

Since the conflicts, the remains of 500 missing people have been found. Since 2013 alone, 200 have been identified and transferred to their families.
