Georgia's young racing driver Sandro Tavartkiladze finished his debut season in Asian Formula Renault in third position, achieving the result despite encountering difficulties with funding his emerging career.

Tavartkiladze, who scored eight podium finishes in 10 races of the open-cockpit formula class, earned the position with 203 points, only 14 behind second-placed Bruno Carneiro. Joey Alders, who represents BlackArts Racing team like the Georgian, was crowned champion with 254 points.

Debuting at the age of 19 in the series in March, Tavartkiladze marked his maiden race with a win at the  Zhuhai Circuit in treacherous weather conditions.

He went on finish the season with no DNF (did not finish) results, a notable consistency only replicated by the champion Alders among drivers who entered all rounds.

The [result] is a source of major pride for me. It was a very difficult but interesting year [and] I would like to say thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to represent my country on such a large stage," Tavartkiladze told his social media followers.

Despite the strong results the Georgian shared his experience of difficulties with finding sponsors during the year on social media, explaining how he had to use worn tyres - or limit his practice running to conserve available tyres - due to not being able to afford enough tyre sets during some race weekends.

Ultimately he found financial support from the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, the MIA Force sports club of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Tbilisi City Hall and the Georgian Automobile Sports Federation to compete throughout the debut year in the series.

The BlackArts team praised him as an “undisputed leader of the [Georgian] scene in single-seater formula” over the past years, with the young driver earning his promotion to the series after competing in the Formula Alpha class in his home country.

Throughout the season, races for the Asian Formula Renault Series were held on a range of circuits including some tracks that host rounds of Formula 1, the pinnacle class of international motor racing.
