Stores begin rounding out Georgian 1, 2-tetri coins

A rule rounding out change given in stores came into play in Georgia starting January 1, 2019.

Based on the new rule, 1 and 2 tetri coins will be rounded to 0, while 3,4,6 and 7 tetris will be rounded to 5.The new rule applies to payment by cash only.

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) clarifies that this rule does not imply price changes on products and services.

1- and 2-tetri coins will lose their status as legal tender and be taken out of circulation in January 2022.

It will be possible to use these coins until the end of 2020. From January 1 of 2021, the NBG will allow those who will still hold the 1 and 2 tetri coins to exchange them at commercial banks.

1-and 2-tetri coins were issued in 1993.
