Sixty-two inmates will meet the upcoming Easter holidays at home following their release from prison after a presidential pardon was announced today.

Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili pardoned 91 prisoners; 62 inmates were released from prison today while the remaining 29 had their prison terms commuted.

The news was announced by head of the President’s Pardon Commission Zviad Koridze at a press conference this afternoon.

Koridze said that among those who walked free from jail today were three female prisoners.

The president is the only person authorised to pardon inmates in Georgia. Decisions to pardon prisoners are based off discussions and recommendations made by the Presidential Pardon Commission.

The last pardon was made in March of 2017, when 157 individuals were pardoned. Of these, 93 were released and 64 received commuted sentences.

Easter is celebrated in Georgia this Sunday, April 16.
