Orthodox Christians in Georgia and the rest of the world are celebrating one of the most important days in their religious calendar this Sunday, Easter.

Tonight, on Easter Eve, Orthodox parishioners will attend a holy liturgy in numerous churches across the country.

The festive service will start at 11 p.m. and continue until the early hours of tomorrow morning, during which prayers will be shared. The clergy and parishioners with icons, crosses and candles will also walk around the church chanting.

Also, the Easter Eve liturgy will mark the end of 47 days of fasting, which started on February 27.

Traditionally the Easter Eve liturgy is attended by Government officials.

The New Testaments writes that Jesus Christ gave his life to pay for the sins of humanity.

The day after Easter Sunday is also special as it is the day families traditionally go to ceremonies and visit their deceased relatives at graveyards.

Good Friday, Easter Sunday and the day after Easter Sunday are public holidays in Georgia.
