What to know before vehicle inspection launches in Georgia?

From January 2018 Georgia is starting mandatory vehicle inspections, testing the road worthiness of vehicles before they are allowed to drive on roads.
The vehicle testing will be launched step-by-step and the inspection of all vehicles will take about two years.
- From January 1, 2018 the first stage will start where powerful engine vehicles (+ 3.5 tonnes) and passenger vehicles (+8 seats) will be obliged to do vehicle inspections.
- From July 1, 2018 inspection will be undertaken for vehicles belonging to state agencies and legal entities.
- From October 1, 2018 powerful engine vehicles (+ 3.0 engine) will have to do vehicle inspections as they consume more fuel and there is more danger of air pollution with their emissions.
- From January 1, 2019 to the end of that year the rest of the auto park will be forced to do vehicle inspections.
How much will mandatory inspections cost?
Mandatory vehicle inspections will cost about 100 GEL (about $37.01/€31.41*) for powerful engine vehicles and 60 GEL for cars (about $22.21/€18.84*).
The vehicles will be inspected following seven major criteria: brakes, steering mechanism, suspension, visibility, car lights, emissions, and tires.
If a vehicle fails the inspection, the driver will be given a month to fix the problem to make it meet the standards to be allowed to drive on the roads. If the problem will not be fixed the drivers will be fined. The amount of the fines will be 50 GEL for private entity and 200 GEL (about $74.02/€62.81*) for legal entities.
How often inspection will be required?
Inspections will not be required for vehicles that are four model years old or newer.
Those vehicles that are from 4 to 6 and from6 to 8 model years – those must do vehicle inspections once in two years.
As for those vehicles who are over 8 model years, they are obliged to do vehicle inspections every year.
