Mandatory vehicle inspections, which will be resumed in Georgia from January 2018, will cost about 60 GEL (about $24.21/€20.62*), and at the first stage powerful engine vehicles will be obliged to do one.
Mikheil Khmaladze, Director of Ministry of the Land Transport Agency of Georgia’s Ministry of Economy, said that fines will increase significantly in the case of unauthorised use of vehicles. The amount of the fines is still unknown.
Khmaladze also said that if a vehicle fails the inspection, the driver will be given a month to fix the problem to make it meet the standards to be allowed to drive on the roads.
In his words, the vehicles will be inspected following seven major criteria: brakes, steering mechanism, suspension, visibility, car lights, emissions, and tires.
The vehicle testing will be launched step-by-step and the inspection of all vehicles will take about two years, announced Economy Minister Giorgi Gakharia last month. In his words, vehicle testing will be launched in January 2018 and will not be delayed for even a day.
Today Khmaladze further commented that at the first stage powerful engine vehicles will go through the mandatory inspections. He said that by the end of October a specific schedule will be announced and it will be clear what type of vehicles will have to do the testing.
As of today, 26 vehicle inspection centers are already established to ensure all vehicles meet European safety standards.
By resuming mandatory vehicle inspections, the Government of Georgia is trying to significantly improve the ecological environment, as vehicles are considered as one of the major contributors to air pollution in Georgia.
It is also believed that vehicle testing will help reduce car accidents in Georgia.
