Georgia will make Third Party Liability car insurance mandatory for vehicles registered in a foreign country in order to assist with the compensation of motor accident victims.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced the news at the governmental meeting today.

He said that Georgia aims to become member of the International Motor Vehicle Insurance System, also known as the Green Card System.

The International Motor Insurance Card System is an arrangement between authorities and insurance organisations of multiple states to ensure that victims of road traffic accidents do not suffer from the fact that injuries or damage sustained by them were caused by a visiting motorist rather than a motorist resident in the same country.

Once the compulsory motor vehicle Third Party Liability insurance is introduced, it will be guaranteed that the victims of motor vehicle accidents caused in Georgia by motor vehicles originating from the countries participating in the Green Card system are not in a disadvantageous position due to the fact that the damaging vehicle is foreign.

Third Party Liability insurance covers any damage or injury caused by the insured to another person or property.

Kvirikashvili added that the government also works to make Third Party Liability insurance mandatory in the future not only for foreign-registered vehicles but all cars in Georgia.
