Preliminary results: Second round of elections needed in 6 municipalities

A second round of mayoral elections could be needed in six municipalities across Georgia, says chair of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Tamar Zhvania, based on preliminary results.

The municipalities are Kutaisi, Ozurgeti, and Martvili in western Georgia, and Kazbegi, Khashuri, and Borjomi in eastern Georgia.

The votes were divided in these areas as per the following:

Kutaisi

  • Giorgi Chigvaria – Georgian Dream – 48.56 %
  • Grigol Vashadze – United National Movement – 27.05 %

Ozurgeti

  • Beglar Sioridze – Georgian Dream – 43.38 %
  • Konstantine Sharashenidze – independent candidate – 41.76 %

Martvili

  • Aleksandre Grigalava – Georgian Dream – 49.6 %
  • Mamuka Danelia – United National Movement – 36 %

Kazbegi

  • Aleksandre Zagashvili – Georgian Dream – 44.61 %
  • Sandro Kamarauli – Democratic Movement – Free Georgia – 26.88 %

Khashuri

  • Giorgi Guraspashvili – Georgian Dream – 41.54 %
  • Ramaz Nozadze – independent candidate – 18.59 %

Borjomi

  • Levan Lipartia – Georgian Dream – 40.54 %
  • Zaza Chachanidze – Alliance of Patriots – 40.23 %

In all other municipal mayoral races the Georgian Dream candidates won, except for Tianeti, where Tamaz Mechiauri – leader of his own party Tamaz Mechiauri for United Georgia – won over the Georgian Dream candidate with a single vote.
