Market fire destroys about 40 shops in Tbilisi

Up to 40 shops have been burnt after a powerful fire occurred inside a construction, repair and autoparts market in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi last night.

More than 100 firefighters tried to tackle the fire that broke out at the Isani Market late on Friday evening. 

Firefighting units did their best to extinguish the fire by 8 a.m. this morning.

It is estimated that a total of 1,200 m2 caught on fire. 

Nobody has been hurt as a result of the fire.

An investigation has already started to establish the cause of the fire.

Local authorities arrived to see the situation on the ground. 

Governor of the Isani district Vakhtang Kizikurashvili said a commission will be set up to calculate the damage. It is understood that the shops have not been insured.
