Georgia has made it among the top 10 countries with the best cybersecurity in the world, says a survey by the United Nations (UN).

Georgia was named eighth on the list topped by Singapore in the survey by the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Reuters reports.

"Singapore has a near-perfect approach to cybersecurity, but many other rich countries have holes in their defences and some poorer countries are showing them how it should be done”, Reuters wrote.

Following Singapore were the United States, Malaysia, Oman, Estonia, Mauritius, Australia, Georgia, France and Canada. Russia was 11th followed by a tie between Japan and Norway. Germany placed 26th overall for its cybersecurity approach while China was 34th.

The survey, which was released on Wednesday, was based on data from the ITU's 193 member states.

Reuters said that the ranking was based on countries' legal, technical and organisational institutions, their educational and research capabilities, and their cooperation in information-sharing networks.

The crucial first step was to adopt a national security strategy, but 50 percent of countries have none, the survey said.
