Georgia making progress in investigation of cybercrime

Georgia together with the countries from the Eastern Partnership Region, South-eastern Europe and Turkey are making progress in the investigation of cybercrime by establishing closer links between professional communities of cybercrime investigators.
Fifty prosecutors, cybercrime investigators, financial investigation/intelligence and cyber security specialists from the Eastern Partnership Region, Southeast Europe and Turkey visited Georgia this week to participate in the Cybercrime Coordination and Partnership Exercise that was held on 24-28 April in Tbilisi.
In the exercise, coordination and cooperation problems were addressed, detecting cyber security incidents, handling suspicious data relating to financial transactions and money laundering and recovering data through international cooperation channels.
A multinational team of experts from France, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom coordinated the exercise.
The simulation exercise aimed at addressing the problems of coordination and cooperation in the most practical way and required participants to detect cyber security incidents against critical infrastructure, apply digital forensics skills, detect and handle suspicious financial transactions and money laundering and recover data through international cooperation channels.
The exercise was organised by the Cybercrime Programme Office of the Council of Europe in close cooperation with the Data Exchange Agency of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.
Georgia has ranked 8th among 165 countries worldwide in the newest Global Cybersecurity Index.
Georgia has made it among the top 10 countries with the best cybersecurity in the world, says a survey by the United Nations . Georgia was named eighth on the list topped by Singapore in the survey by the UN International Telecommunication Union.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Operative-Technical Agency and the National University of Ireland concerning cooperation in cybercrime investigation and digital forensics, including trainings, exchange visits, study programmes, the exchange of scientific research and consultation services.
About 30 per cent of Georgian computer users have faced various cyber threats in the first nine months of 2019, while 32 per cent of the users were attacked by dangerous programmes, Kaspersky Lab Georgia reports.
The US Department of Justice has praised Georgian law enforcement agencies for their efforts and role in the identification and the conviction of the members of GozNym malware cybercrime network, affecting thousands of people worldwide and causing millions of dollars damage. GozNym infected tens of thousands of victim computers worldwide, primarily in the United States and Europe.
