12 outstanding citizens receive diaspora award

12 outstanding citizens have been awarded today for their special contribution to the development of the Georgian diaspora abroad.
The final list of the nominees has been selected from 150 by the diaspora members.

The diaspora award has gone to:
- Singer Keti Melua, painter Lika Shkhvatsabaia and folk dancer Maka Lomadze - for promotion of Georgian culture abroad;
- Historian Davit Kolbaia, Doctor Sopo Adamia, Scientist Merab Kokaia and Surgeon Ioseb Nanobashvili - for their contribution in science;
- Ph Degree student Mikheil Sarjveladze - for public diplomacy;
- Basketball player Zaza Pachulia - for his contribution in sport.
- Austrian entrepreneur Leonid Bausbeck, Greek journalist Teodora Avgeri and Swiss musician Thomas Hisermann - for devoted friendship to Georgia.
The awards ceremony organised by the Georgian Foreign Ministry has kicked off for the first time this year.
Many representatives of our diaspora have achieved significant professional and career success at the countries they reside. With their talent and intellect they have gained respect in the societies where they work in different fields”, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze addressed the audience today.

The event serves as recognition of the merit of those Georgians who have achieved their professional success out of the country thus contributed to promoting Georgia’s positive image in culture, sport and science.
Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi is now hosting a forum Strong Diaspora for United Georgia aimed at deepening relations with Georgians living abroad, discussing their challenges and finding solutions.
New program for Georgian diaspora announced
Georgia is strengthening ties with hundreds of Georgian immigrants living abroad by launching a new program ‘Georgia Awaits You’, which will provide all necessary information about the country’s recent development to Georgian diaspora.
Georgia’s top two officials – the Prime Minister and President – have addressed the second Diaspora Forum in capital Tbilisi today, bringing together hundreds of Georgian immigrants living abroad.
This year’s theme of the event was ‘Share Your Experience with your Homeland’.
Deserving children living along the occupation line are enjoying the festive season and opening New Year gifts sent by young Georgian diaspora living in the United States (US).
Tbilisi hosted the forum "The strong Diaspora for united Georgia" to mark the Diaspora Day. The event was attended by the representatives of Georgian Diaspora from different countries and representatives of Georgian government to discuss the possibilities to increase engagement of Georgians living abroad in the country's policy making process.
Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze has met with representatives of the Georgian diaspora at the Georgian embassy in Washington D.C yesterday to discuss the importance of the diaspora’s involvement in the events ongoing in Georgia.
Georgian Prime Minister and President, as well as the Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II have emphasised the role of the Georgian diaspora in the maintenance of the EU-Georgia visa free deal, “one of the biggest achievements of the country,” at the diaspora forum held in Tbilisi earlier today.
The Government will remove “all artificial barriers” to enable representatives of the Georgian diaspora to easily receive passports, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Friday at a forum dedicated to Diaspora Day.
