Tens of thousands of literature enthusiasts are expected to visit this year’s edition of Tbilisi International Book Fair, with the annual event launched in Georgia’s capital earlier today.

The four-day fair will see local publishers, bookstores, universities and other organisations present new books, offer sales on literature and host talks by authors.

Organisers will also invite the young audience to the children’s corner of the fair area, while dance, music and theatre performances will entertain visitors.

Organised by the Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, the fair will run in Georgia’s capital for the 19th time.

The Expo Georgia fairground, where the event has been taking place over the recent years, is hosting over 20 Georgian publishers.

Presenting new books and successful editions at Pavilion 11, the participants also offer accessories and gift packages to visitors.

In one of the principal sections of the fair, the event will present Focus Country Norway via the Norwegian Literature Abroad (NORLA) foundation and four Norwegian authors visiting the event.

The group of visiting writers will be Roskva Koritzinsky, Simen Ekern, Sigbjoern Mostue and Nils Henrik Smith.

They will be joined by Georgian authors for panel discussions on subjects including relations between literature and politics, the fantasy genre in writing, and more.

Presentations at the fair will include new Georgian translations of foreign titles. These will include Travelling Eastern Europe by celebrated Spanish author Gabriel Garcia Marquez and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, a 1969 autobiographical work by American writer and activist Maya Angelou.

Stalls at the fairground will also host visitors looking to find fresh foreign-language translations of Georgian literature, including a new German edition of A Book of Wisdom and Lies, the 17th century magnum opus by writer and diplomat Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani.

Beside fictional themes, books presented at the fair will include documentary works on Georgia’s political history as well as publications on contemporary political activism.

Children visiting the annual event will find activities in a special corner, where they will learn to create figures on paper, solve challenges on logical thinking and have their faces painted.

Held since 1997, Tbilisi International Book Fair was established to promote literature, help forge new contacts between industry professionals and prospective international partners, and develop local and regional book market.

Following its founding the fair has grown to include more than 50,000 registered guests for its annual editions.
