Invictus Games 2016: Georgia’s wounded warriors win medals

The Invictus Games 2016 are coming to an end but already Georgia has won two well-deserved medals at the prestigious competition for injured servicemen and women.

The Invictus Games are an international adaptive sporting competition for that aims to contribute to the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, disabled or sick service members from around the world.

In this year’s competition, held from May 8-12 in the United States (US), about 500 service men and women from 15 countries are competing in a range of sports.

Yesterday Georgian athletes competing in sitting volleyball defeated the Netherlands 2-0 to take home a bronze medal.

Earlier, in their semi-final match Georgia lost 2-1 against the United Kingdom (UK) team.

Prince Harry attended the match and congratulated Team Georgia, which played well and were extremely close to victory but were edged out by the UK team.

"It was a great match and a brilliant Invictus story - Team UK helped Georgia with coaching sessions via Skype in the run up to the Games," wrote Prince Harry on Instagram accompanied with this picture.

Earlier in the competition Georgian Sergeant Giorgi Bochorishvili won a silver medal in the 100m dash.

The Georgian athletes who competed in this year’s Invictus Games were servicemen who had been wounded in the Russia-Georgia war in August 2008 or in other international operations.

Invictus Games 2016 are currently being held in Orlando, Florida. This was the second time the Games have been held since inaugurating in London in 2014. This year’s competition will officially close tomorrow, May 12.

The US Embassy in Tbilisi wished good luck to Georgia’s team in the final days of the competition.

It said: "Invictus” means "undefeatable” and at the 2016 Invictus Games, Georgia’s unconquered Wounded Warriors are competing against wounded and injured soldiers of 14 other nations.”

"The US is proud to host this year’s Invictus Games and the men and women who put their lives on the line and suffered life-changing injuries while serving their countries.”

The Invictus Games were founded by Britain’s Prince Harry in 2014.

This year’s event featured about 500 participants from 15 countries including Australia, France, Georgia, the UK, US and Germany.

Over four days athletes participated in 10 sporting events: archery, driving challenge, indoor rowing, powerlifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.
