A waste processing factory is planned to be constructed in Tbilisi.
The project, initiated by Tbilisi City Hall, has already been approved by the Economic Council, which was led by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
After technical works are finished on the document, Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania will announce the Expression of Interest.
It is not yet determined what type of waste processing factory will be built. Several versions including a factory oriented only on biological or solid waste recycling are possible avenues to explore. The factory might also process all types of rubbish.
According to the document of the Expression of Interest, investors will have full freedom in choosing which type of factory they wish to be involved in.
After this process has completed, a special commission within the city municipality will be created, which will review offers from investors and select the winning offer.
Current legislation obliged ‘Tbilservice Group,’ which is the company responsible for the city’s waste management, to provide separation of waste until 2019.
Tbilservice representative Levan Jgarkava said the company was already working in this direction and after the winning investor company was named, separation of waste would begin parallel to the construction of a waste processing plant.
"We are planning to install special bins. As you know, this is not a simple process and we are planning to hold an advertising campaign as well and our population will have to take part in this too,” he said.
"We will also conduct a survey about this. The project will initially start in one of the districts of Tbilisi and then slowly spread to the whole city,” he said.
