47m GEL for infrastructure development in Guria

More than 47 million GEL will be spent on infrastructure projects in Georgia’s Guria region in 2014.

The idea to fund infrastructure projects in the Western Georgian region was discussed today at a special meeting between Infrastructure Minister David Narmania and Governor of the Guria region Giorgi Chkhaidze and local authorities.

At the meeting it was decided the Ministry will allocate about 40 000 GEL to multiple projects.

The Regional Infrastructure Projects Fund will grant just under 8.5 million GEL to the initiative.

Roads

Construction and renovation of roads is the most important thing to work on in the Guria region this year, and 29.9 million GEL will be spent on upgrading the region’ road system.

This money will fund three important road-related projects.

Upgrading the Natanebi-Shroma-Ureki road will be completed this year, as well as construction-rehabilitation works on two sections of the Samtredia-Lanchkhuti-Grigoleti road.

Solid Waste

Solid waste management projects will be funded with 380 470 GEL from the state budget. The work will be completed by Solid Waste Management Company.

Upgrading the landfill in Ozurgeti will be completed this year and will open for use. Maintenance work at the Lanchkhuti and Ozurgeti landfills are also planned.

Other Infrastructure work

The Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure has allocated slightly more than 2.3 million GEL to implement other infrastructure projects in Guria.

This includes restoring the roadbed destroyed and damaged by the Gubazeuli River, a new bridge to be built on the river Sepa and upgrading work on the bridge over the river Tskhrapona.

In addition, in areas prone to landslides, preventative work to protect the road from being destroyed is planned. Particular focus will be held on the Ozurgeti - Ninoshvili - Lesa road. Furthermore, modernizing a water intake facility is scheduled.

Officials at the meeting also reviewed the projects approved to be implemented in the Guria region, from the Fund for the Projects to be implemented in the Regions of Georgia.

Priorities of these projects have been determined by the local authorities. The Regional Development Commission has already approved 28 projects with valued at about 8.5 million GEL.

Fifteen projects from this list include construction and rehabilitation of roads, four 4 projects involving upgrading water and drainage channels, eight projects to modernize kindergartens and one project to regulate outdoor lighting.
