Georgia’s regional population to benefit from new Kutaisi landfill

The Georgian Government is taking action to reduce the effects of waste pollution by developing a new landfill in Kutaisi – Georgia’s second largest city.
Kutaisi, located 221km west of Tbilisi, will meet international standards and be built by the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia.
The new facility will service the regional population, particularly those in Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and lower Svaneti regions.
The project will be financed by Germany’s KfW Development Bank.
Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, attended working meetings on February 11 and12 as part of the Kutaisi integrated solid waste management project.
At the meetings discussed conditions of the landfill agreement with KfW Development Bank representatives and the winning tender consulting companies, ERM and PEMM.
More than 47 million GEL will be spent on infrastructure projects in Georgia’s Guria region in 2014.
Hundreds of thousands of Georgian residents will be able to dump their rubbish in a more modern landfill funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
A waste processing factory is planned to be constructed in Tbilisi. The project, initiated by Tbilisi City Hall, has already been approved by the Economic Council, which was led by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
Two existing landfills will soon be closed in Black Sea coastal cities of Batumi and Kobuleti and a new landfill will be opened in Tsetskhlauri, 45 km north of Batumi within the solid waste management project of Adjara.
