Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili supports the proposed candidate for Prime Minister – Giorgi Kvirikashvili - who was selected by the Parliamentary Majority today.
I am sending the new candidate for Prime Minister to Parliament for approval so Georgia can have new Government before the New Year,” announced Margvelashvili.
Now Georgia’s Parliament must approve Kvirikashvili’s candidacy of Prime Minister of Georgia.
Meanwhile, Margvelashvili said he supported the resignation of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
Within the last two-three days I supported the resignation of Prime Minister as well as the new candicate for this position [Kvirikashvili]. Now it is Parliament’s turn [to complete the process],” said Margvelashvili.
Earlier today the Parliamentary Majority – the Georgian Dream coalition – named Foreign Minister Kvirikashvili as a candidate for the Prime Minister of Georgia role, following the surprise resignation of Garibashvili two days ago.
Meanwhile, Garibashvili will continue to carry out the Prime Minister's duties until a new Prime Minister and Cabinet of Ministers are confirmed.
In the coming days Kvirikashvili must name his ideal Cabinet and present it before Parliament to be confirmed.
His candidacy must also be approved by Parliament of Georgia.
