Critically acclaimed Georgian film wins awards at Spanish film festival

A Georgian short film has collected four awards at the Bueu International Short Film Festival in Spain on Saturday, adding to its awards gained at various international contests over the past three years.
Dinola, a short fiction directed by Mariam Khatchvani, won the Spanish festival’s runner-up award as well as prizes for Best Screenplay, Cinematography and Costume Design.
Judges were tasked with selecting award winning films from a shortlist of 23 short films from around the world, with a separate Galician Section featuring four local Spanish productions.
Plot in Dinola followed locals in a remote mountainous Georgian village in a story about strict customs separating a mother from her child. The film uses local language from the Svaneti region shown in its scenes.
The international jury for the 2014 Grimstad Short Film Festival called Khatchvani's work a "poetic film that paints a picture saturated with tradition in a moving and personal way”.
Earlier this year the film, produced by Tbilisi-based 20 Steps Studio, won the top prize in the Short Fiction Competition category at the DaKINO Film Festival in Romania and was the Grimstad Short Film Festival’s jury nominee for the 2014 European Film Awards.
The film also featured at numerous other festivals and contests through 2013-2015.
Meanwhile the eighth annual Bueu International Short Film Festival was held from September 7-12 in Centro Social do Mar in the Galician municipality of Bueu.
