Four Georgian films are in contention for prizes at the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival in the Netherlands.

The seventh annual festival, which kicked off yesterday, will feature award-winning film Corn Island by director George Ovashvili on November 7, while three other Georgian productions will have their Dutch premieres on November 8.

Giorgi Mrevlishvili’s short film Reflection – an 11-minute production shot in Georgia’s mountainous Ushguli village – will join director Shalva Shengeli’s documentary piece The Ruler about the fate of a statue of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in a small Georgian town.

Reflection and The Ruler will premiere alongside Bueu International Short Film Festival prize-winning film Dinola by Mariam Khatchvani that focuses on human experiences in the midst of strict customs in a remote village of Georgia’s mountainous Svaneti region.

The Eastern Neighbours Film Festival will feature 41 films from Eastern European states including Serbia, Croatia, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey over 10 days of screenings and hosted in three locations in The Hague: Filmhuis Den Haag, Humanity House and Het Nutshuis.

This year is the seventh annual Eastern Neighbours Film Festival. The event aimed to "get the Dutch and international audience in the Netherlands acquainted with the cinema and culture of their eastern neighbours,” organisers said.

The annual Festival focused on a key historical event for each of its editions, with the theme of this year’s event being the 20thanniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement that put an end to the Bosnian War of the 1990s.

To mark the date the Festival will feature more than a dozen films from the Balkan countries, many of which focused on the legacy of the conflict.
