The President of Georgia is calling on peace and unification as he remembers those who died while fighting for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

At Mukhatgverdi Brothers’ Cemetery today Margvelashvili and other top officials paid tribute to the victims of the 2008 Russian-Georgian war.

During his speech Margvelashvili said unification was impossible without peace.

He said those who died in the five-day August War were heroes and their sacrifice was not in vain. To ensure this didn’t happen again, Margvelashvili said in the future there must be coordination between all forces of Georgia so the country could better protect state interests.

"Today we recall the heroes who sacrificed their lives for their home country. At the same time we think on what can be done in the future. Georgia will be united and we will achieve this goal through a unanimous policy that will cover absolutely everyone.”

"You know that a year ago a discussion was launched among political parties, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the public and all other related parties about which state forces should be united. The process is ongoing and it will definitely bring positive outcomes,” Margvelashvili said.

The President stressed that the main idea of this initiative was unification around common interests, despite different political views, that centred around love and friendship and not rivalry.
