Georgia is cracking down on misleading labelling of dairy products.

From tomorrow dairy products will be clearly labelled if they are made from animal byproducts.

Specifically, food labels such as milk, sour cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, butter and other will only apply to animal milk products.

If vegetable fats are added to dairy products, producers will be obliged to label the products accordingly, such as "with fats similar to cottage cheese” or "with fats similar to sour cream” and so on.

The Georgian National Food Agency said the changes aimed to strengthen food safety and provide the population with more information about what they are eating.

If the new regulations are not followed, business operators will be fined to violating the new labelling rules and the offending product will be banned from being sold in Georgia.

Previously labeling rules were not regulated in Georgia, which meant that dairy food and products with vegetable fats were labelled similarly.
