Developing transport capacity and infrastructure remains a priority for Tbilisi City Hall this year, announces Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze who held the first government meeting of 2019 today.

The Tbilisi public bus fleet will be completely renewed in 2019, meaning that all existing yellow buses will be replaced with new ones, which will be environment-friendly.

Metro stations and train cars will be renovated: currently the Samgori metro station is under renovation and Avlabari metro station as well. Work will be completed on 20 February.

A tender has been announced to renovate Station Square metro station as well, and will be announced for Gotsiridze, Isani, Freedom Square, Rustaveli, Marjanishvili and Tsereteli metro stations this year.

As for the renovated Varketili metro station where the ceiling collapsed last year, an investigation found that last year’s project did not meet safety norms and so it will be implemented again, but now in accordance with safety standards, said Kaladze.

Also the renovation project of Guramishvili metro station was found lacking and it will be re-implemented this year.

Tbilisi City Hall will continue renovating damaged bridges in the capital.

In 2015 all bridges in Tbilisi were examined and we now know which bridge renovations should be a priority”, said Kaladze.

Vakhushti Bridge on River Mtkvari will be renovated this year, announced Kaladze.

Also this year, President George W. Bush Street, sidestrips of the Kakheti Highway and monument ‘Human and the Sun’ will be renovated. Kakheti Highway is the main road that connects Tbilisi Airport to the city.

At the end of the meeting Kaladze announced that New Year trees and Chichilakis (a Georgian traditional Christmas tree made from dried hazelnut or walnut branches that are shaved to form a small coniferous tree) can be delivered to Vake Park, Kikvidze Garden, Rike Park, and Vere Garden for recycling.

Kaladze said that throwing New Year trees and Chichilakis in the garbage has created problems.

Within the ‘Care About the City’ campaign, now citizens will be able to deliver used New Year trees and Chichilakis to special points where “the green waste will be recycled and used in different ways”, said Kaladze.
