Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday met with Ashot Smbatyan, the Armenian Ambassador to Georgia, to discuss “historically strong friendship and fruitful cooperation” between the two countries, the Parliament said.
The parties highlighted the importance of deepening parliamentary relations and reviewed current political developments in both countries.
The officials focused on Armenia’s “growing interest” in strengthening its ties with the West, including through its recent signing of the Charter of Strategic Partnership with the United States last week, and noted that further development of Georgia-US and Armenia-US relations would “significantly depend” on the newly elected US President Donald Trump.
The parties also reviewed the current situation in the South Caucasus region and stressed the importance of regional peace and stability.
They also agreed on a need to “properly commemorate” the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Aznavour, a late French singer of Armenian descent with paternal ties to Georgia.
