The City Hall for the city of Khashuri in the south-western Georgian municipality of the same name on Wednesday said about 10 individuals and 40 families had been evacuated from a landslide risk zone in the town of Surami.
Abundant rainfall on Tuesday developed landslides in the area, with employees from the City Hall, the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and its Emergency Management Service mobilised to the site, the body said.
It added geologists would study developments in the location and provide a
"qualified assessment" of risks following the precipitation, and noted state services would “act to eliminate the landslide process in a limited amount of time”.
It also called on the public to remain calm and follow recommendations of representatives of the state services.
In his comments to the media, Tengiz Chitiashvili, the Mayor of the Khashuri Municipality, said overnight landslip processes had not continued, adding geological reports would be used to decide when residents would be allowed to return to their homes.
