Irakli Garibashvili, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday offered his condolences after two people died in the western Adjara region and bodies of five individuals were recovered in the western municipality of Baghdati after a landslide and an avalanche hit the localities on Tuesday.

I express my deep sorrow for the tragedy in the Adjara and Imereti regions. Unfortunately, the disaster took the lives of many of our fellow citizens. I express my sincere condolences and sympathy to the family members and relatives of the deceased, [and] to our public as a whole”, Garibashvili said in a social media message.

The country’s Interior Ministry on Wednesday said abundant overnight rainfall in the Imereti region had caused the landslide, which covered four residential houses under a land mass in the village of Nergeeti.

One survivor had been rescued, the body added, while search and rescue operations were still ongoing.
