The National Security Council of Georgia on Thursday said it would develop the management principles for establishing an early warning system for the population during emergency situations.

At the interagency working group meeting, chaired by Levan Girsiashvili, the Head of the National Security Council, the elaboration of recommendations for the Government and the preparation of the draft project of the relevant decree for the early warning system were discussed.

The importance of “effective management” and “proper functioning” of the public early warning system was also reviewed at the meeting, the body said.

The NSC Head noted this was an extensive issue and was not limited only to the installation of so-called alarm sirens, but also it would need the active involvement of the public and a comprehensive approach by the Council.

“The best practices of the European countries are taken into account and I would like to express appreciation to the United Nations Development Programme, as a partner in this initiative, and the international experts contributing to this effort”, he pointed out.

Girsiashvili also added the body would present the project and recommendations to the Government as soon as possible.
