Vakhtang Gomelauri, Georgia’s Interior Minister, on Friday extended his gratitude to police officers for their service to the country and citizens and selfless work.

In his speech at an event dedicated to the Police Day, Gomelauri highlighted the law enforcement’s “uncompromised efforts” in combating crime.

The centuries-old history of Georgia preserves many stories of heroism. We have modern heroes, and right now, with special pride, respect and gratitude, I want to remember all those professionals who sacrificed themselves for the protection of the homeland and citizens”, Gomelauri said.

Gomelauri also paid tribute to the memory of the police officers who died on duty by observing a moment of silence.

Remember, we must be strong for the country to be strong and free. It is our duty to protect the interests of the state with dignity. That is why we must always stand firmly on the guard of our country's security”, he noted.

The Minister also stressed he would not allow the discrediting of honourable police officers, by saying that “I will always be a defender of your honour and dignity”.

I can proudly say that the Georgian police is composed of decent, professional and dedicated professionals. The role of each of you in protecting the security of our country is very important”, he told the event.

The official also highlighted that the Ministry had a “proper infrastructure, equipment and material and technical base, updated car park and armament”, and noted it was “necessary for a police officer to have decent working conditions”.

The event was also attended by the Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, as well as the representatives of executive and legislative bodies.
