The political and sectoral cooperation between Georgia and Paraguay was discussed on Wednesday by Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and his Paraguayan counterpart Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, the Foreign Ministry said.

At the meeting held within the framework of Darchiashvili’s first official visit to Paraguay, the officials welcomed the historic visit of Georgian FM and noted it would take the existing relations between the two countries to “a completely new level”, emphasising the “successful cooperation” within the scope of international organisations.

The FMs highlighted the deepening of cultural and people-to-people ties and stressed the importance of “further intensifying” the cooperation in this regard. Darchiashvili pointed out the importance of developing relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries, including enhancing the existing relationship with Paraguay, based on common values.

The growing economic potential of both Georgia and Paraguay, as well as the common characteristics of the two nations in terms of economic openness and attractive investment environment, was also noted by the sides, with Lezcano expressing interest in strengthening cooperation in trade, economic and tourism with Georgia, citing the country’s important geostrategic location.

Georgian FM briefed his counterpart about the current challenging security situation in the Black Sea region and emphasised the increased regional importance of Georgia, which was “further enhanced” after obtaining the European Union membership candidate status in December 2023.
