The Georgian national football team on Thursday defeated Luxembourg in the semi-finals of the UEFA Euro 2024 playoffs at the home stadium in Tbilisi, advancing to the playoff final of the tournament.
The team, coached by Willy Sagnol, claimed the victory with two goals by Budu Zivzivadze.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the Georgian national team and Napoli winger, was not able to help the team against Luxembourg due to disqualification. He received his third yellow card at the tournament’s qualifying group match against Spain on November 19.
Before the kick-off of the match, Ilia Topuria, a mixed martial arts fighter, who last month became the first athlete from the country to earn the title of the UFC World Featherweight Champion, presented his championship belt to the Georgian fans.
Georgian singer Nutsa Buzaladze, who is representing the country in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, also performed her contest song Firefighter to the public at Dinamo Arena stadium in the country's capital city of Tbilisi.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the representatives of the executive and legislative bodies attended the semi-final match.
The Georgian team will meet the winner of the Greece-Kazakhstan match on 26 March 2024, and the winner of the final will advance to the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
